On March 14, 2020 our hearts went out to our students and school personnel when it was announced that Dare County Schools were closing for preventative measures against the Coronavirus. On March 23, 2020 Governor Cooper gave the Executive Order that the closing would be in effect until May 15, 2020. At that point, the HIYEF Team knew we had to spring into action. We wanted our students and their families to know how much we cared for you, but more so than that, we wanted to show how we would be there to support you in the coming weeks of uncertainty. After some researching, we found that food seemed to be the biggest issue for our families. From that idea, Fuel for Focus came to life over the following weeks.
The goal of Fuel for Focus is to provide funding for meals to Hatteras Island students and support for local businesses currently servicing our community during this challenging time of "stay at home". Our hope for each family is that the use of "HIYEF Bucks" will be a time of togetherness during mealtime. A moment to sit back, relax and let the comfort of family and food fill your hearts and tummies.
Each student of Cape Hatteras Elementary School and Cape Hatteras Secondary School will be provided with $50.00 of "HIYEF Bucks" to be used at participating businesses for the purchase of takeout food or food items. Full details of the Fuel for Focus project as well as all participating businesses can be found on our web page by clicking here.
The students of Hatteras Island will remain the heart of the Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund and the reason that we work to sustain and provide for them in times of trial and triumph.
We love you all and the community strength that is Hatteras Island. We wish you all to be well and to find the joy in each day!
- The HIYEF Team
